The KG-989G makes sense for operators who primarily want their handheld to do one thing well: communicate on GMRS.

The UV96G is FCC certified for GMRS and rated for up to 6 watts of output power. It offers up to 999 channels along with Bluetooth, dual watch, priority-channel monitoring, priority scanning, and CTCSS/DCS tone scanning.

Where it really separates itself is on receive. In addition to VHF and UHF reception, the UV96G can receive aircraft-band communications, FM broadcast radio, and NOAA weather radio with alerts. Its 2800mAh battery is also the largest supplied battery among the four radios compared here.

That broader receive coverage does not mean the radio can transmit everywhere it can listen. Its certification and transmit functionality remain centered on GMRS.

Who is it for? The enthusiast, traveler, or preparedness-minded operator who wants a premium GMRS handheld that can also serve as a much more versatile listening tool.

The choice becomes easier once you stop trying to identify a single winner.

Choose the KG-989G if you want the core features needed for serious GMRS communication without paying for capabilities you are unlikely to use.

Choose the KG-S88G Plus if your radio needs to survive outdoor use and its IP67 protection is more important than having the broadest receive coverage.

Choose the KG-935G Plus if you want a strong balance of advanced GMRS features, environmental protection, channel capacity, and everyday usability.

One thing we would not use as the deciding factor is the difference between 4, 5, 5.5, and 6 watts.
